Merchants Gate was originally designed featuring traditional pre-cast elements to provide emphatic surround detailing to multi storey height windows.

Due to the deep reveal profile, combined in some areas, with a projection from the building line, large section components were specified to achieve the required effect. These would have required substantive steel support and restraint as well as causing the contractor some considerable difficulties with lifting methodology.

The use of hollow section GRC allowed a more simple and cost effective support solution which could be installed with mobile lifting equipment.

Both the texture and colour of the original pre-cast were completely replicated to the approval of both the employer, architect and local authority. The result that the finished project was indistinguishable from the original design.
