We are delighted to have been awarded three contracts being undertaken at the Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) site at Birley Fields. The £139 million masterplan will see main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine construct student residences, an academic centre, energy centre, multi storey car park and extensive public realm areas.

At the heart of the scheme is the £60 million academic centre which is has been designed to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating. Given the desire to achieve this level of sustainability RIBA Stage E architects Sheppard Robson and yet provide a solid and substantive cladding to the lower floors GRC was a natural choice. Throughout the design process GRCUK worked with the architects to develop a colour/texture combination which would complement the cladding being used on the upper floors. This was ultimately achieved with the development of our stunning Comet mix design.

With the architects and client so happy with this finish it was also specified for the adjacent Energy Centre. Here the panels are required to span over 5 metres in height and feature an abstract embossed birch tree pattern designed by design services architects Capita Symonds.

The third contract is GRC cladding to the multi story car park designed by Fairhurst architects. Again this will feature Comet panels which are unusual in being architecturally faced to both inside and outside of the building. This will be achieved by using a unique stud frame system currently being designed by the company.

Installation of the GRC will start in March and contunie throughout the year
